When the sun is shining

When the sun is shining and the Studio has a float of staff, there is really no excuse but to don the old Bowler, striped strides and grey light weight coat, climb aboard our immaculate tricycle, “Little Sister”, and drift through the streets of Mayfair and St James’ spreading the sparkling word according to GUY&MAX. Despite it being hot work up hill, I often push, there is a wonderful positivity generated by, at least, doffing the aforementioned titfer as people repeat our name aloud and, at most, settling down to clean and appraise, as a complimentary service, the jewellery of the area’s lovers of our trade. For obvious security reasons, most choose to take their diamonds to the shop after our mobile meeting but I am always pleasantly surprised by the charming reception our pop up shop receives. Some let me work then and there; “Little Sister” has an ultrasonic cleaning machine aboard and I can take notes using my trusty mm leverage and 10x lens. All that is then required is to type up the information on return to Shepherd Market and send it.
My meandering today took me to Berkeley Square, Mount Street, South Audley, Grosvenor Square (I felt a little awkward pushing the boxed trike in front of the US embassy!), past Claridges and then onto Bond Street where I attract interesting attention from the competition. GUY&MAX’s pioneering designs have already been mimicked here which we take as the ultimate compliment. Zig-zagging through Dover Street, the trike and I popped out beside the Ritz Hotel and, rather than brave the traffic along Piccadilly, I pushed her into Green Park. I have the utmost respect for this fair Kingdom’s monarchy and, in the knowledge that Her Majesty owns these beautiful spaces, I kept my chit chat to a minimum, despite the oft enquiries, for fear of being accused of hawking.
In spite of my efforts, these peaceful wanderings attracted the attention of the local park police constabulary who tailed me in their car. I carried on pushing. After a time, they glided to my side and with a hearty, “Good afternoon, Officers!” I tried to continue on my way. “Sir owns the jewellery shop in Shepherd Street?” was the astute question from the crawling panda. I explained, yes but I was having a little time out of the shop that afternoon. It was then pointed out that, thanks to the joint commercial references to GUY&MAX and Krug champagne emblazoned on my machine, I was not welcome in the park. Fair enough. Both these brands, with their emphasis on the pinnacle of luxury, have no cause to upset, just please. With a polite apology and smile, I wheeled her back onto the street.
So, I have no gripe with Her Majesty or her efficient and charming law enforcers but where does one draw the line? If somebody, as many were whilst lounging in the June sunshine, is wearing a T-shirt with a well known brand splashed across it or even a similar trike just carried the manufacturers name on it’s frame, would they be ejected too?
